By incorporating the logo into the windows it gives memorable look without taking away from the current window displays.

Our upcoming project for the Air Canada Centre involves several different pieces coming together for the Lord Stanley's Mug bar located in the building.
As different as each of these materials are, putting the look together could get a bit puzzling. In order to head off such difficulties we pieced together our own puzzle.

Take a look at the tips of the wooden pieces in the pic below to see what I mean.

After being assembeld & painted our puzzle pieces came together to form this familiar shape

For the past few months, we've been creating a buzz through social media. Many may think this is a pointless waste of time, but for Sign Depot, it's given us to get to know others in the community. Here in Kitchener Waterloo Ontario there has been a shift in the last decade or so from being a factory based community to the new technology hub in Canada.

Sign Depot has always been a contributor to networking in KW (members of the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce & the Kitchener Waterloo Business Women's Association), but now we're taking it one step further.

Through this blog, & our twitter @TheSignDepot we've made several new local connections & attended local events that we would not have know about otherwise.

One such event was the KW Design Meetup. Thanks to @CuteGecko 's introduction to @Jooliah Sign Depot was invited to their monthly meetup as a presentor.

Facade program giving downtown a facelift

KITCHENER — Behind the sleek new sign and the strikingly modern stucco lays the bones of a building that has watched over Kitchener’s downtown for nearly a century.
With its modern facelift, Mario Halapir’s soccer retail store and uniform business, Sports Link, shows little sign of its age. But what it does show, Halapir hopes, is his commitment to the business and the city’s core.
“With the economy the way it is right now, everyone’s thinking about saving dollars,” he said. “We thought about it the other way around. We said, ‘We’re going to invest some money into our business so we can be here forever.’ ”
The Sports Link façade improvement is the largest completed project in the city’s granting program, which matches exterior improvement dollars for commercial businesses in the downtown.
The city will pay up to $10,000 per storefront for approved projects. In total, Kitchener has $600,000 to hand out over the five years of the program.
In 2009, the city approved grants totalling $175,000. The private investment portion of those projects will equal about $375,000 since some businesses exceed the maximum amount that could be matched, said Cory Bluhm, the city’s urban investment adviser.
The program launched last year, replacing a façade loan initiative the city set up a decade earlier. Since transitioning to a grant program, interest from the local business community has picked up, said Bluhm.
“This is the most value per grant you can get from any other municipality,” he said. “We did that on purpose.”
Brantford started up a similar grant program in 2009, but they cap their grant at $9,500 and the city only awards a maximum of $50,000 per year. Kitchener has $125,000 to fund projects in 2010 and $100,000 for the remaining three years after that. That money comes from a fund the city had previously set up to finance the loan program.
Waterloo offers an interest-free loan program for façade upgrades, but the city doesn’t match investment. Cambridge has a hybrid loan-grant program that allows businesses to take up to 35 per cent of their total approved loan, usually between $5,000 and $20,000, as a grant. That program has been in place for at least a decade, but hasn’t been well used of late, said Trevor McWilliams, a senior planner with the city.
In its inaugural year, 10 businesses were approved for grants in the Kitchener program. Four projects, including DNA silk screening, two storefronts at the Tannery, Matter of Taste and Sports Link, are now completed. Two more King Street projects are close to completion.
Sports Link, located on the corner of Charles and Ontario streets, made $80,000 worth of improvements to its façade, including upgrades to the windows, signage and all new stucco.
“We had been planning on doing renovations on the building, but when the program came out, I thought ‘What a great opportunity,’ ” said Halapir. “Instead of piecemealing it like we probably would have done because we couldn’t afford everything, we used the grant money to finish everything the way we wanted to do it all at once.”
The building was the old Oktoberfest headquarters before Sports Link moved in upstairs. They later took over the ground floor as retail space and have been making upgrades as they go. The new façade gives the building a dramatic new look and has been attracting a significant amount of attention, Bluhm said.
“We’ve heard so many people say, ‘We didn’t know that existed. When did he come?’ ” he said. “He’s been there 15 years.”
The façade program is aimed at businesses within the area bordered by the railway tracks on the west to Cedar Street on the east, and Joseph Street on the south to Weber Street on the north. Of the 10 projects approved last year, seven are on King Street.
“Right now, there’s a lot of mismatching going on,” Matter of Taste co-owner Phong Tran said of the storefronts on King. “Overall, I think if everybody pitches in and does their own, I think it will make this area look nicer.”
The 2010 deadline has passed and the city is working with business owners on nine new projects. If some drop off in the screening process, they’ll make those grants available again on a first come, first served basis.
There’s no deadline for the work to be completed, but the businesses don’t get reimbursed until all the work is done.
In the end, the city would like to see a downtown that flows and is inviting, while ensuring it gets the most bang for its buck, said Bluhm.
“The goal is to actually execute 60 high-quality projects. Sixty done over this downtown will mean a real improvement.”

Looking at the list I realized I can purchase a majority of it at Dollarama. So that's what I did!I got everything except the laundry soap bars. Creating a Landmark

The best signs make you stop and take notice, they draw you in for a closer look.

Souvenir City located in Niagara Falls Ontario commissioned us make a sign for their glass blowing studio. What better sign could we make other than huge vase.

We have created a variety of unusual signs for this client from a chain saw carved bear and moose to a Mountie on his horse perched high above the road way.

Every year thousands of tourist are drawn in to pose and snap pictures in front of the signs - photo memento's of a falls vacation. While stopped buying souvenirs!

Here's how we did it.

First, we built a arm powered lathe to accommodate the huge foam shape.

Handles were made from foam and covered in fiber glass

A welded steel super structure for central rigidity and a mounting plate.

The turned vase was then installed onto the steel post and surface coated in two layers of 6oz. woven fiber glass cloth

A complete sanding and filling to smooth the surface

Finally, a crack paint job by Dave to bring out the character of translucent glass. A clear UV top coat to hold the colour, and wax to accentuate the shine.

Done and installed it's hard to miss. Even while we were installing folks were close by getting their picture taken in front of the vase.

I notice many of the those picture takers later wander into the store and exist bags in hand - my work was already hard a work.

Tip

Your carved cedar sign should last forever - at least out last you.

Resin in western red cedar is naturally very rot resistant. But, your sign can become dull looking from a build-up of grime and dirt.

Simply wash with warm soapy water to remove dirt and top coat with spray on car wax for a clear protective water repelling finish.

15min once a year will keep your sign looking good

* Do not use high pressure washer to clean your sign as this will damage wood and finish.

Doon Twines & Sign Depot, A Good Move

Moving due to an expired lease, we have taken the opportunity to reassess Sign Depot. Where do we want to be? What kind of company do we want to be? How do we want to service our customers going forward? What do we want to look like within the sign market and to our customers?

All big questions and while daunting at first, it is a revitalizing

belly-button gazing exercise. We will continue to redefinte who we are and what we do.

Over the past month we have slowly and steadily moved into our new crib. Directly across from the old location we are still located at the corner of Borden and Charles but now south...about 200 ft.

The space we choose to work in influences the work we produce. We look for, and create work spaces that inspire us, has a story, and inevitably say something about us.

We have chosen Kitchener's historic Doon Twines building as our next shop/studio. A grand factory from the early 1900's that wears the history of it's workers like smile wrinkles of a experienced traveller. Boot polished hardwood floors, sturdy steel rivet I-beams, soring steel truss vaulted ceilings and sky-lite work area's. This building has a straight forward honesty, it's structure is not hidden, beams and braces are exposed and understood.

Sign design share these structural attributes. Good design makes sense with a clear message and materials reflecting the business and suggesting a story you want to know more about.

We look forward to working within Doon Twines to create some of our best work.

We carved western red cedar to reflect the interior lodge theme and introduce the moose to customers even before the stepped inside. Using a torch we burnt and flamed the wood to give a natural shadowing effect then top coated with

" cetol " to preserve and bring out the warmth of the wood. Details like custom hammered iron brackets compliment the carved wood and add to the handmade feel. Custom made moose antler door pulls are memorable and a fun addition to the restaurant.

It's easy to stand out. One recently completed project is " Beside Moms " a nice little cafe located in Nairn, Ontario. Always surprises me how the extra effort of carved dimension brings a sign to life. For this project we simply carved a bowl full of blueberries - coffee cup - muffins and cookies.

Simple, effective and noticeable.
